LINCOLN, Neb. (KLKN)- May marks the busiest period of the year for movers and many could be scammed by fraudulent moving services if not careful.

Better Business Bureau of Nebraska’s Josh Planos, warns that “cutting corners” could leave Nebraskans out of thousands.

“Scammers are a lot more sophisticated than we give them credit for and so they were looking to take advantage of a growing number of people who were looking to move,” Planos said.

In 2021 Nebraska BBB received over 1,100 complaints against moving companies, and over 300 scam victims reported losing nearly $820,000 from moving scams.

Planos says “beware of phone scams” and companies that don’t have physical addresses.

“There are folks who create a fictitious website, so it’s a fraud, to begin with,” Planos said.  “A company that doesn’t have a physical address, you may think it does, but the company doesn’t exist.”

Doing research, and knowing the signs can prevent moving scams from victimizing Nebraskans.

Nebraska’s BBB encourages paying attention to a business’ history, and its complaints, and getting multiple estimates before moving to make sure it’s not a scam.
