A Blairsville woman was sentenced to over six years in federal prison on charges of mail and tax fraud, after Indiana County prosecutors say she stole more than $500,000 from her employer over the course of a decade.

Sandra J. Doak, 64, of Blairsville, was sentenced to 42 months in federal prison by Judge Cathy Bissoon in the Western District of Pennsylvania.

Doak worked for a medical practice with two offices, one on Colony Boulevard in Burrell Township, near Blairsville, and another on Wayne Avenue in White Township, just outside of Indiana, Trooper Philip Dern of the Indiana station reported in court documents.

Doctors at the offices told troopers that Doak printed out multiple checks payable to herself from the medical practice’s bank accounts and put the money into her private bank accounts, Dern reported.

“The victims also provided troopers with credit card statements from the practice that showed multiple unauthorized expenditures,” Dern said in court documents.

Troopers obtained a search warrant for Doak’s personal bank records and found “over $500,000” was stolen from the victims, Dern said.

Police said the seized documents also disclosed a $14,000 trip to Disney World that paid for using medical practice accounts, plus miscellaneous credit card purchases. Doak also paid off thousands of dollars in personal credit card tabs during the period, Dern reported.

Indiana County District Attorney Robert Manzi Jr. said bringing in federal partners allowed Doak to face stiffer penalties than in state court.

“The partnership between our local, state and federal law enforcement agencies allowed this case to be investigated locally and prosecuted federally. This partnership allowed Doak to face sentencing guidelines that called for multiple years of incarceration, instead of state guidelines that called for months” said Manzi.
