Position Summary:

National University System (NUS) is committed to transforming lives through lifelong learning and education. NUS is looking for a Chief Digital and Data Officer (CDO) focused on developing and executing against an integrated, enterprise level data strategy for the entire organization. Reporting to the Chancellor, the CDO will shape NUS’s digital strategy at every level, proactively championing data as a competitive edge and strategic asset, as well as a driver of innovation and business impact across several evolving analytics domains. The CDO will also work to identify (and gain access to / acquire) data assets which will be of value across domains, through acquisitions, partnerships, and other means. The CDO must guide the organization to enable rapid expansion of data self-service capabilities (including training, discovery, hosting, collaboration, and partnerships / ecosystems) across the organization.

Essential Functions:

  • Drive digital innovation and develop a holistic data strategy for how the organization can use data to distinctively serve students.
  • Build or acquire access to differentiating data assets, particularly those which have organization wide implications and leverage data to build competitive advantage in the near and longer term.
  • Facilitate and implement digital strategy by working with cross-functional partners to map and transition traditional processes to digital ones and working with product leads to realize a vision for more consumer grade experiences.
  • Work with analytics domains across the organization to encourage innovation in data and to transition the university to a big data organization; building on the capacity to use data to enhance optimization efforts.
  • Collaborate with teams across the business to design, build, and manage an innovative digital ecosystem.
  • Generate innovative digital solutions for products, services, processes, customer experiences, marketing channels, and business models.
  • Identify, develop, and acquire data which has cross-domain value and track use and ROI.
  • Leads a team of talented data/digital specialists to positively impact the organization by leveraging data.
  • Advise on strategy and establish partnerships with data providers and others in the broader data ecosystem to enable privileged data access and new client offerings and create cross-sector value.
  • Establish partnerships to uncover and share leading practices in data management and inject them in the organization to facilitate continuous improvement.
  • Develop and/or identify additional tools needed to enhance, support, and improve capabilities to deliver data-based products across departments.
  • Stay up to date on industry and regulatory developments impacting organization-wide data and related technology and operations.

Supervisory Responsibilities:   Leads and builds a team of digital/data specialists

Requirements:

Education & Experience:

  • 10 or more years working in data management, including creating partnerships, implementing data governance, and understanding the underlying technologies needed to enable data innovation across a large organization; 5 or more years in a senior level data strategy related role.
  • Advanced degree in technology, engineering, or related field preferred.
  • Proven track record and experience in developing data strategy, policies, and procedures, as well as successfully executing programs that meet or exceed expectations in a dynamic environment
  • Proven history of leading successful digital transformation projects.
  • Experience creating tools and capabilities to assist with data discovery & collaboration, ensure data quality, and to load, clean, enrich, manage, and share data and metadata from a variety of sources.
  • Proven experience monetizing data and demonstrated ability to leverage data assets into new markets and across sectors.
  • Experience in a progressive academic institution or world-class high technology company preferred.

  • Able to build a sense of trust and rapport that creates a comfortable & effective workplace.
