Information and Technology Services (ITS) at the University of Michigan has an exciting opportunity for a Core Applications Supervisor working in Data, Innovation, Systems and Cloud (DISC). This position is responsible for supervising a team which manages a number of linux based applications including Nagios, Email Routing, Ansible Tower and Git applications. This position will lead a team that will help shape the strategic direction for automation and monitoring of ITS’s compute environment. The position will also supervisor the postmaster function. 

This position will report to the IS Director in DISC.

Responsibilities and Priorities include:

  • Ensure smooth operations of linux based and SaaS applications
  • Integration of the postmaster function into Core Application team
  • Providing day to day supervision to the Core Application team, which includes encouraging staff development and growth
  • Design a roadmap for next generation monitoring capabilities for ITS and our customers
  • Provide guidance and leadership to continuous improve the email routing environment
  • Helps set an example for other teams on how best to utilize the cloud
  • Inspire a culture of innovation and automation across ITS

Define overall roadmap and strategic planning of the training direction for ITS programs and projects.  Collaborate across the organizations within ITS and the University of Michigan (U-M) to plan, prioritize, and lead training efforts and develop strategies to meet future requirements. 

  • Effectively utilize leadership and strategic thinking skills to lead strategic planning efforts to define the strategy of the training direction for the organization with alignment to the organizational training strategy and collaborate across the organization to plan and coordinate program and project team priorities.


  • Demonstrate skill development by actively participating in professional growth opportunities for continuous development and improvement and applying new skills/knowledge to the job as evident by the ability to efficiently and effectively perform assigned duties, resulting in meeting customer expectations and performance metrics.

Required Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, certification, and experience.  
  • Minimum of 6 years’ experience in IT working in a large scale enterprise environment, or equivalent work experience, working independently to successfully install, configure, maintain, and linux operating systems applications requiring ability to maintain confidentiality, timeliness, customer service, organization, prioritization, and troubleshooting.
  • Experience with Configuration Management
  • Proficiency with monitoring technologies
  • Familiarity with email technologies
  • Familiarity with Git
  • Experience running applications in the cloud
  • Expertise to identify and leverage appropriate technical tools to perform day-to-day administration tasks, root-cause analysis and service restoration (such as backup, restore, failover, log interpretation, and performance monitoring) for Linux based applications

Desired Qualifications*

  • Experience operating an email environment at scale
  • Proven ability to lead and guide Tier 3 Operations teams to meet customer expectations.
  • Familiarity with AWS, Linux Shell Scripting, Nagios and Ansible or similar technologies
  • Experience with shell scripting
  • Experience with Area1

Physical Demands / Work Environment
Average amount of time in a stationary position, average mobility to move around an office environment; able to conduct normal amounts of work at a computer; travel to various locations on and off campus.  Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance is required.  May require on-call availability and may require working during non-business hours and on weekends. This role will be considered a hybrid role with expected in-office frequency at least once per week.
