Summary

The Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation (OVPRI) invites candidates to apply for an
exciting opportunity as the Director Data Management and Business Intelligence in the Division of Research Information Systems. The OVPRI
seeks to partner with faculty in all Schools and departments as they seek funding, plan studies, establish collaborations, calculate
budgets, submit grant applications, negotiate industry contracts, and secure patents and licensing agreements.  Allowing researchers to
continue uninterrupted research and perform their essential duties while allowing for internal/external data sharing across Schools and
Universities.  Transferring burden from researchers to expert research computing staff to coordinate data management and security plans,
compliance and data security needs, honest broker services, communication with and training PIs on data security, and serve as the interface
for technology issues related to research computing.  Become a leader among national research universities in providing all students with

Typical
Duties

The newly established Research Computing Center (RCC), a division of the Office of the Vice President for Research
and Innovation (OVPRI), provides a central IT hub to support research computing needs across the VCU research enterprise.  Staff of the RCC
are focused on research computing needs, including research data storage and computing, research data security, honest broker services, a
research data catalog, research administration data analytics and business intelligence, research application development/support, and
research administration systems.  The RCC’s mission focuses on:
Transferring burden from researchers to expert research computing staff
to coordinate data management and security plans, compliance and data security needs, honest broker services, communication with and
training PIs on data security, and serve as the interface for technology issues related to research computing.
Allowing researchers to
continue uninterrupted research and perform their essential duties while allowing for internal/external data sharing across Schools and
Universities.
Offering robust and secure data storage controls, enforcement, monitoring and reporting for research data.
Implementing
and managing research administration systems across the research enterprise.

The Director of Data Management and Business
Intelligence will oversee the data management and business intelligence team with a focus on:

  • Coordinate reporting, forecasting, and
    business intelligence of research administration data for use by senior administrators/schools/departments throughout the university.
  • Maintaining a central data catalog of VCU/state/federal datasets for research purposes.
  • Assist with honest broker services
    for de-identified datasets for researchers utilizing data from VCU Health.
  • Providing support and assistance to researchers with
    RedCap and other research related data acquisition/management platforms.

With the establishment of the RCC, an initial objective
for this position will be the establishment and building out the functions of the data management and business intelligence team.  This role
utilizes resources throughout the enterprise and must have the comprehensive training/experience to provide direction for the optimization
of data management. The ability to create positive interactions with executive level leadership so a translation of organizational strategy
into technical requirements can be achieved will be a differentiator for any leader in this role. Exceptional independent judgment and
logical reasoning are highly required due to the need for providing timely decisions to direct the successful completion of uniquely complex
objectives that have enterprise-wide impact.  The Director of Data Management and Business Intelligence role works under general supervision
to general direction, making routine to complex decisions independently and referring unprecedented issues to the responsible parties. This
role is also a resource for others by participating in mentoring, coaching, and training.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in decision analytics, applied statistics, information systems, computer science or related discipline or an equivalent
combination of education and experience required. 

  • Demonstrated analytical planning, organizational and prioritization skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in writing and verbally to a varying audience.
  • Strong BI solution architectural, design, data
    modeling and implementation skills.
  • Strong understanding of system workflows and how data impacts decisions.
  • Strong
    project management skills and experience.
  • Expertise in conflict resolution.
  • The candidate should have demonstrated
    experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a staff member at VCU.

Preferred Qualifications

Advanced degrees are preferred.

  • 3+ years data warehousing, business
    intelligence, or data management experience are strongly preferred.
  • Experience with Tableau, Python or R.
  • Experience
    with DBMS (i.e. SQL Server, MySQL, etc.)
  • Experience working in a university setting is preferred.

Salary
Range: 82,600 – 122,500
