Ball State University Information Technology is seeking a Director of Enterprise Information Technology Architecture. In this role you will be responsible for providing architectural guidance across the division, reviewing existing processes, implementing new systems, and decommissioning legacy systems and processes. You will have the opportunity to leverage Ball State’s on premise virtualization environment in addition to cloud providers. You will serve as a key resource for introducing automation and applying best practices for integrating institutional systems while interacting with key stake holders in functional areas throughout the university. Position Function

Advise the Associate Vice Presidents for Information Technology on the short- and long-term design, architecture, and planning of Ball State University’s technology ecosystem; develop the primary planning strategies for technical design of the university’s business, information/data, applications and system architectures; support IT’s directors in developing an architecture perspective for Ball State University’s technology ecosystem that matches the university’s strategic vision and aspirations; lead ad hoc teams both internal to IT and across campus bringing services online, optimizing existing services, and decommissioning legacy services.

Minimum Education

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in Information Systems, Computer Science, or other related area.

Minimum Experience

At least five years of management experience with higher education information and business process, methods, frameworks, IT solutions management, or IT strategic planning; demonstrated experience working within and across the technical layers of an IT environment including complex servers, storage, operating system, and application layer design and deployment in an enterprise environment.

Minimum Other

Ability to engage technical staff across a broad range of disciplines when translating institutional business needs and architecting resulting systems environments; understanding of higher education organizational, political and business dynamics; track record of establishing and maintaining a high level of trust and confidence among executive leadership and technical experts alike; known for fostering a strong sense of collaboration, facilitation, and collegial negotiations; knowledge of enterprise architectural processes, methods, and frameworks; demonstrated strong communication and interpersonal skills grounded by sound intellectual integrity; possess the ability to think creatively and strategically, while having the capacity to act operationally.

Master’s degree.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Ranking: 1
    Provide support to the IT administrative team in establishing and maintaining a proactive and agile business, information/data, applications, and systems architecture plan that provides a sustainable framework, standardization, consolidation, automation, and appropriate assessment metrics to maintain and operate enterprise systems; assemble IT resources to align services with industry practices and implement plans.
  • Ranking: 2
    Seek out legacy manual business processes throughout the enterprise and implement more efficient and highly automated approaches that better utilize campus resources. Review internal IT systems and processes identifying areas in need of optimization and implement streamlined replacements. Work with functional areas and IT resources to streamline business processes using integration and automation and finally operationalizing these processes. Remove systems that duplicate functionality and implement services that synchronize common data among disparate systems.

    Advise the IT administrative team from an enterprise and holistic perspective when determining technology roadmaps and advise on strategic migration plans and large institutional projects.

    Implement systems, services and architectures that decouple the Ball State campus from its physical location moving them towards an online presence; migrate existing services from their on campus presence to equivalent services readily available in the cloud. Identify the necessary IT resources to integrate new cloud based services using integrated authentication, demographic feeds, security principles and industry hosting environments.

    Provide direction to the various areas within IT regarding integration and automation with the goal to reduce complexity and increase operational efficiency. Ensure that custom integration and services utilize industry standards and are responsive and reliable while maintaining the highest level of supportability. Confirm that systems and services leverage industry standard security architectures.
  • Ranking: 6
    Leverage opportunities to drive down costs by operationalizing systems management, services implementations and enterprise monitoring and log management. Provide a more stable and reliable environment using proactive measures included in standard monitoring and logging solutions; system owners are notified of potential issues before the issues turn into end user problems. Provide direction for the team responsible for monitoring and log review in order to provide the highest level of up time and responsiveness for enterprise systems and infrastructure. Ensure consistency in logging and monitoring for all enterprise class level systems.

    Communicate with functional areas, applying judgement when operating within the capabilities of a system vs. the needs of the functional areas; apply technical and functional creativity when architecting a sustainable solution, properly balancing the needs of the functional area while adhering to industry standards.

    Proactively advise the IT administrative team on systematic processes designed to prevent technical problems before the problems impact campus services; be knowledgeable of vendor products and technical solutions found in higher education and architectural approaches utilized in complex IT environments.

    Serve as a technical resource during the RFP process and implementation of new systems aligning services integrations with IT standards including authentication, demographic feeds, and data export processes; facilitate data needs assisting in the routing of requests through MIDAS for approval.

    Perform periodic reviews of current systems and technologies across the enterprise and conduct reviews of emerging technologies and evangelize new technologies that optimize the IT architectural direction. Coordinate engagements with existing system owners confirming existing integrations and evaluating new integrations.

    Work with the EPSO through the RFP process, implementation and onboarding of new institutional systems; work on the RFP, scripted demonstration requirements and identifying campus stakeholders and possible vendors. Work through the onboarding process once the new system is implements and work with IT Security reviewing user and role configurations.

    Assign and review work, orient and staff and professional personnel and make recommendations in all areas related to supervision, including but not limited to, interviewing and selection, compensation, performance appraisal, training, discipline and career development.
