Primary Function:

The Director of Information Technology (IT) Security will coordinate all activities relating to the security of Information Technology resources throughout the Vincennes University system. This includes implementing, monitoring, and managing various security related policies, procedures, and technology. This multi-faceted position will perform at many different levels including ensuring legislative compliance, policy development, coordinating IT staff security activities, as well as hands on technical responsibilities. The position will provide both strategic direction and technical solutions relating to IT security and will be responsible for the integrity of all University systems, the confidentiality of electronic communications and the security of Vincennes University’s technical infrastructure. The Director of IT Security must ensure superior customer service in an environment that expects 24/7 availability of systems.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Develop information security strategy, architecture, and technical requirements for all information technology assets.
  • Oversee the development of security policies for all University systems and computer equipment and ensure that existing and new systems meet the security requirements.
  • Lead the procurement, configuration, deployment, operation, and monitoring of security-related hardware and software.
  • Maintain awareness of legislative mandates and trends in the IT security industry, assure timely and appropriate adjustments to Vincennes University technology infrastructure.
  • Effectively communicate security requirements within the University, build awareness and support among the members of University community.
  • Working with various individuals throughout IT, ensure antivirus, firewalls, VPN, IDS, SPAM, security patch deployments, centralized logging system, disaster recovery and business continuity systems are appropriately designed and functioning.
  • Perform periodic vulnerability assessments and security audits.
  • Develop account management procedures (creation, password management, and deletion).
  • Assist with new system implementations by evaluating their security controls and associated risks. 
  • Ensure data backup systems are appropriately designed and functioning correctly.
  • Keep up to date on relevant product vulnerabilities, evaluate system patches/workarounds, and develop procedures for patching security holes in University systems, including testing their effectiveness.
  • Create, manage and monitor centralized logging systems.

Expectations:

  • Direct and monitor all activities relating to IT security at Vincennes University.
  • Develop security plans for software and hardware implementations.
  • Orient staff to department and Vincennes University IT policies.
  • Determine information security staff training and development needs.
  • Address security concerns and work with staff/management across all areas of IT and Web Services (Marketing).
  • Actively participates in discussions and decisions with members of the IT Management Team.
  • Work with Senior Management within the University and Human Resources to develop appropriate University-wide security policies. 

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Expert knowledge of operating systems, network standards, protocols, and architectures. In-depth knowledge of firewall systems, including configuration experience.
  • Knowledge of legislative mandates and trends in the IT security industry.
  • Excellent project management skills. Working knowledge of Intrusion Detection Systems, protocol analysis, as well as network monitoring and management.
  • Experience with development of security strategies, security plans and policies for a comparable size organization.
  • Ability to conceptualize a long-term vision of evolving security requirements and architecture.

Education and Experience:

  • Three to five years of security related experience in Information Technology.
  • The successful candidate will hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree. Coursework in IT security, computer science, MIS or related field preferred.
  • Professional certification (CISSP or GIAC) preferred
  • Must demonstrate a commitment to on-going technical education and development.
