The Institute for Robust Quantum Simulation is an NSF Quantum Leap Challenge Institute devoted to theoretical and experimental research on
quantum simulation. The Institute will also carry out educational and outreach programs aimed at nurturing a quantum-capable workforce. The
Institute is headquartered at the University of Maryland, with partners at Duke, North Carolina State, Princeton, and Yale Universities.
Under the supervision of the Institute Director, the Director of Operations will work with an Executive Council to determine research
capacity and direction, establish community engagement apparatus, and to develop and deploy programs such as workshops and conferences, a
seed grant program, and a network of institute partners. This involves guiding Institute leadership and researchers to define programs,
planning activities, coordinating events, gathering information and formulating reports, presenting to advisory boards, and supervising
education/outreach and communications staff.

Duties:

  • Work with the Executive Council to prioritize
    research directions, determine research capacity, establish community engagement, and manage budgeting. Coordinate monthly meetings of the
    Council.
  • Supervise and work with education/outreach staff to establish cross-institutional course planning, K-12 outreach programs,
    and undergraduate and graduate courses.
  • Plan, develop, analyze, and manage budget, including developing multi-year budget
    forecasts. May oversee the preparation and management of grant and contract proposals.
  • Lead the organization of the annual
    Institute Workshop. Manage logistics for an annual community- facing Conference on Quantum Simulation and an associated summer school for
    junior researchers.
  • Gather data and feedback on Institute programs and organize reporting of Institute activities and finances to
    NSF. Coordinate interaction with the Institute’s internal and external advisory boards.
  • Provide support to the Institute
    Partners networking group.
  • Supervise full-time education/outreach coordinator and part-time communications staff member.
  • Establish and maintain collaboration tools for Institute researchers (Slack, data repository, website, publication database).
  • Undertake other tasks as necessary.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical
    (science, engineering, or mathematics) or business field.
  • At least ten years of professional experience
  • At least four
    years of supervisory experience
  • Strong leadership and organizational skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication
    skills
  • Strong computer skills
  • Ability to work on multiple tasks within a given timeframe
  • Attention to detail
  • Timely follow-through

Institute for Advanced Computer Studies

  • Sensitivity in working with domestic and international
    visitors, faculty, and staff
  • Sensitivity in working with high-level industry, government, and University personnel

Preferences:

  • Master’s degree or Ph.D. in a subject related to quantum science and technology
  • Experience with project/center coordination and meeting organization
