Buyers and sellers were unable to log in to eBay on Monday afternoon from about 3:45 pm – 5 pm Eastern. In some cases, users were unable to log in at all, while those who were able to log in said they could not stay signed in.

As a result of the glitch, sellers said their sales were disrupted.

“First it was constantly having to relog in every time you did something,” a seller reported on Ecommerce EKG, “and now it’s not even accepting the correct password. Can’t do anything on eBay right now.”

The reports also surfaced on Down Detector, social media sites including Facebook and Twitter, and on the eBay discussion boards.

At 4:22 pm Eastern (1:22 pm Pacific), a seller posted a thread on eBay, “Login Screen Pops Up when trying to do ANYTHING…” writing the following message (paragraph breaks added for easier reading):

“I have been attempting to update my listings and starting about 1230 PST had issues getting into the promoted % within listings, then it had trouble updating the % when I finally did get into that screen.

“So I switched it up and tried to create a new listing and bam…Log in screen. Create new listing…Log in screen. Sell Similar…Log in screen.

“Go to the Respond to Open Messages…Log in screen.

“EVERYTHING sends me to the log in screen and when I do log in it just refreshes to the log in screen again. Have tried on both Google Chrome and Firefox. Everything seems to work on my mobile, but NOTHING works on desktop.”

At 4:49 pm Eastern, a user wrote, “At least eBay has acknowledged the issue” and included a screenshot of the System Status page that showed problems with Buying, Shipping, and Sign-In functions.

At 5:32 pm Eastern, almost 2 hours after the problem started, an eBay moderator jumped in to the discussion and said she’d been told the problem began “around 12:45pm PDT” (3:45 pm Eastern) and asked if users were still having issues.

Outages and glitches on eBay are of particular concern to auction sellers due to last-minute bidding. A seller concerned about the impact of the glitch asked eBay through a tweet: “@eBay have a fairly expensive card auction ending in 50 minutes, any updates on the login failures?”
