Cybercriminals launched a second attack on Scotland’s environmental watchdog while it was trying to repair its computer systems after the initial breach, new reports have suggested.
The Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (Sepa) was targeted on Christmas Eve last year. About 4,000 of its digital files, including contracts, strategy documents and databases, were stolen.
They were later published online in a ransomware attack. Conti, an online gang, claimed responsibility for the incident.
It has now emerged that Sepa’s cyber-response plan and its disaster-recovery procedure were unavailable as they were stored on servers targeted by the hackers. Investigations also found that staff initially responded quickly to the breach, which began just after midnight, but it took until about 8am to escalate the problem to officials.
