This position serves as the inaugural Executive Director of External Relations for the Division of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) and is responsible for establishing and developing relationships with industry and nonprofit organization partners, identifying and tracking funding opportunities, facilitating responses to requests for information and/or research proposals, discovering opportunities for collaboration among research groups, and helping to develop and write proposals.
The position develops strategies for measuring and capturing the impacts of external relations activities, projects, programs, and initiatives, in partnership with the CDSS leadership team. The position serves as a representative of CDSS to the broader university and external stakeholders, and provides expert consultation related to program development and external partnerships to amplify CDSS’ impact and reach.
In collaboration with CDSS’ Chief Development Officer, the position will work to secure external financial support to sustain the division’s growth and manage relationships with partners and programmatic funders. The position will work closely with the Associate Dean for Research at CDSS as part of a collaborative senior leadership team, including the Associate Provost and Dean, Associate Deans, Chief Administrative Officer, Chief Communications Officer, Chief Development Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Chief Technical Advisor, and Department Chairs.

40% Research Proposal Development and Management:
Works with the Associate Provost and Dean, Associate Dean for Research, Chief Development Officer, Chief Technical Advisor, and partners to lay groundwork for proposal development and fundraising efforts.
Researches opportunities and facilitates responses to requests for information, research proposals, and/or partnerships from industry and nonprofit organizations.
Enables opportunities for faculty, researchers, staff, and students to collaborate on various projects. Works to identify potential resource opportunities through industry partners, sponsored projects, and nonprofit organizations.
Helps to draft proposals; once funds are received, reviews, guides, and approves work at various stages of completion.
25% Partnership Development and Relationship Management:
Establishes and develops relationships with government, industry, and community stakeholders and partners; identifies and tracks funding opportunities with various public and private organizations and granting agencies; facilitates responses to requests for information and/or research proposals.
Creates opportunities for engagement in person and online for stakeholders and partners to serve as guest lecturers, give presentations, serve on committees, and serve as mentors.
Promotes CDSS with industry and nonprofit stakeholders and partners so they understand our goals, programs, research, and people.
Establishes relationships with partners to develop research and education program opportunities and commitments, including mentorships, internships, and
Collaborates with other campus offices to identify and develop relationships between CDSS and various funding sources and partners.
20% Program Development and Events:
Working with various divisional groups — including Berkeley Institute for Data Science, Center for Long Term Cybersecurity, West Big Data Innovation Hub, and other similar units in CDSS — provides structure, opportunities for collaboration, and oversight to program development and event professionals responsible for producing education and research programs and events for targeted audiences including college students, professional researchers, and the general public.
Creates and oversees programs and events designed to build a vital intellectual community of researchers through symposia, conferences, seminars, and career networking.
Leads team in brainstorming sessions related to research programs, events, and proposals.
15% Management and Supervision:
Effectively manages staff and contractors, to ensure timely and compelling external relations activities, including proposal development and events.
Develops strategies for measuring and capturing the impacts of activities, projects, programs, and initiatives, in partnership with CDSS leadership.
Recruits, trains, supervises, evaluates, and takes disciplinary action as necessary for the team.
Sets team priorities and plans workflow for team.
Recommends opportunities for professional development.

- Demonstrated experience with management and team building — both internally to the organization and with external partners. Advanced ability to coach, facilitate and influence people at all levels.
- Bachelor’s degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
- Academic background and recognized expertise in selected area of research.
- Advanced knowledge of the organization’s priorities, processes, protocols and procedures.
- Demonstrated experience representing a highly technical and emerging organization with nonprofits and industry.
- Knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs
- Experience developing strategic plans, programs, and financial planning for an emerging organization.
- Terminal degree in a related area (PhD, JD, MD, etc.) preferred.

*The salary range designated for this position: $105,600 – $177,000; however, starting salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
