Job Summary:

The College of Letters & Science (L&S) at the University of Wisconsin-Madison seeks an experienced IT leader to provide strategic vision and coordination for IT services, facilities, and initiatives within the college. The L&S IT Director will be a member of the L&S leadership team and will represent the college in campus-level discussions. They will report to the L&S Associate Dean for Operations and Staff.

The successful candidate will have an appreciation for the strengths and limitations of decentralized IT organizations, and enjoy leading and collaborating within an interdisciplinary, distributed operational structure. They will possess a leadership toolkit that enables them to nurture positive, inclusive work environments; think strategically; communicate with diverse stakeholders; develop effective partnerships; and deliver results. And they will understand the unique importance of information technology in supporting the research, teaching, outreach, advising, and administration mission of a public research university, including the impact of IT infrastructure on diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in higher education.

The College of Letters & Science is home to the humanities, the natural, physical and biological sciences, the social sciences and the computing, data, and information sciences at UW-Madison. L&S is UW’s largest college, with more than 20,000 undergraduate and graduate students and 3,000 faculty and staff. Its faculty and staff share knowledge in the classroom, the lab, the field, and throughout our communities.

The L&S IT Director will function in a highly decentralized IT environment where approximately 90% of all L&S IT staff are employed in college departments, programs, and centers and only 10% are employed within college administration. The person in this role will oversee a team of ten IT professionals within L&S administration working in cybersecurity, computer and network support services, AV pool services, classroom support, and computer lab support, and will establish advisory and coordination relationships with more than 100 other IT professionals in departments, programs, and centers located throughout the college — for example, the Instructional Design Collaborative (https://idc.ls.wisc.edu), the Social Science Computing Cooperative (https://www.sscc.wisc.edu), and the School of Computing, Data, and Information Sciences (https://cdis.wisc.edu). And the L&S IT Director will interface with leadership within the campus Division of Information Technology (https://it.wisc.edu) which employs roughly one-third of all campus IT staff.

Responsibilities:
Develops and directs the implementation of strategic plans for the division’s information technology (IT) function to ensure that resources are utilized to provide effective information technology services.Typically manages IT services through subordinate managers.

  • 35% Directs strategic information technology planning initiatives and establishes divisional objectives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, staffing resources, and alignment with the strategic plan
  • 10% Develops operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and divisional objectives
  • 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 5% Develops and audits the budget
  • 25% Serves as the divisional IT liaison representing the division’s interests to internal and external stakeholders
  • 15% Advises institutional or divisional leadership on information technology operations and business models

Qualifications:

* Minimum seven years of IT work experience with increasing responsibility for IT strategy, facilities, services, and operations.
* Minimum three years supervisory experience. Demonstrated capacity to develop the talents and expertise of staff. Proven ability to recruit and retain well-qualified, high-performing professionals and empower them to succeed.
* Experience leading teams, building positive, collaborative working relationships, and moving initiatives forward with diverse groups of stakeholders and partners.
* Working knowledge of technologies leveraged by institutions of higher education in support of education, research, outreach, advising, and administration.
* Demonstrated understanding of IT issues impacting diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in higher education.
