What you will do:

Cornell University is seeking a dynamic and committed web accessibility professional to join in a demanding and visible position as the IT Manager – Web Accessibility Services. The work includes collaborating with campus entities, departments, and committees to ensure the accessibility of technology, systems, applications, websites, etc. This position will play an integral part in helping to ensure an effective compliance program university-wide.

The Manager will demonstrate experience and leadership in the promotion and implementation of accessibility measures in electronic information technology. The Manager is the key advocate, expert and first contact for the University community on questions about web accessibility. The individual in this role must have proven strengths in communication skills.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Establish and communicate guidelines, best practices and standards related to designing and maintaining accessible websites, online applications, and vendor provided web services. Effectively communicate complex technical concepts to less-technical stakeholders in a clear and easily digestible manner.
  • Identify, analyze, and mitigate enterprise risks related to Web Accessibility (WA) related to online technology. Detect, deter, avoid, and respond to instances of non-compliance with applicable regulations and policies.
  • Manage the workflow and prioritization of accessibility projects and take appropriate corrective action when necessary; provides advice and counsel on ADA issues.
  • Develop and implement outreach and training on principles, tools and techniques for members of the University community who maintain websites or use the web to deliver instructional materials.
  • Actively involved in the technology and technical services procurement process to help ensure accessibility requirements are made part of contractual agreements.
  • Lead accessibility audits of key institutional websites and web applications and evaluations for websites and applications under consideration for purchase.
  • Identify, implement and oversee tools for supporting Website Accessibility.Maintain a Web Accessibility website or a robust resource section under the Cornell Accessibility website.
  • Management of designated WA resource/s. This includes: all aspects of staffing, employee training and development, guiding, mentoring, coaching, and performance management.
  • Actively participate and liaison with other University ADA Coordinators to share knowledge and work towards a cohesive all-inclusive service for the University.
  • Stay up to date with current legislation and lawsuits regarding access against other universities, as well as other businesses and state and local governments.

Remote position

This position is located in Ithaca, New York. The successful applicant will be asked to perform this role remotely at a location in the United States.

The New York Convenience of employer guidelines require New York State individual tax reporting and withholdings for this position. Additional individual state income tax filings may also be required if working temporarily outside New York State.

Additionally, you will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree with minimum of five to seven years of experience with web accessibility guidelines and laws. Specifically, expertise and providing guidance in WCAG 2.1 (minimally) standards and Section 508 accessibility requirements in conjunction with knowledge of the Americans with Disability Act Amendments (ADAA) and other relevant laws and regulations in a complex higher ed environment and how these laws directly impact what services may be provided and how those services are delivered.
  • Knowledge of principles guiding application of reasonable modifications under the ADA.
  • Experience conducting system analysis; planning, designing, analyzing, testing, and implementing accessibility solutions. Experience drafting accessible technology guidelines, procedures, and policies. Experience evaluating third party technology systems against accessibility standards. Expert in facilitating remediation of accessibility issues with little guidance.
  • Experience in testing electronic information with automated testing tools and assistive technology such as screen readers, screen magnifiers, and speech recognition software.
  • Experience documenting test plans, expected test results, actual test results, identified issues, and steps to replicate accessibility findings.
  • Effective communication, listening and negotiation skills.
  • Able to assimilate and organize large bodies of diverse information.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced, dynamic team environment with conflicting and constantly changing priorities.
  • Project management experience that leads to strong organizational skills and understanding timelines and deliverables.
