Guwahati: The popular Hindi-television game show Kaun Banega Crorepati (KBC) is now being used by fraudsters to defraud citizens by sending them fraudulent and spam messages, informed the West Jaintia Police.
Police said these messages are being circulated via apps such as WhatsApp and Telegram, among others, using international numbers (+92,00, & +11).
The format of the show (KBC) is similar to other shows in the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? franchise where contestants are asked multiple choice questions and must select the correct answer from four possible choices, and are provided with lifelines that may be used if they are uncertain. Since the 2013, the top prize of KBC has been ₹7 crore.
When victims try calling the number the team of tricksters identify themselves to be from the KBC team and ask them to pay a certain amount for processing of the lottery or as GST, informed Jowai Police via Twitter, asking the public to be vigilant.
The police also provided citizens with suggestions to help them stay alert so they don’t fall prey to such scams.
Citizens are asked to never respond to such messages and avoid establishing contact with unknown persons. They must also avoid transferring money to such persons without confirming their identity and credibility.
The police have also advised that people must refrain from sharing their bank details with anybody and alert their banks immediately if they come across any suspicious activity relating to their account.
