NSW Premier Dominic says he doesn’t regret sending a text message to Prime Minister Scott Morrison later leaked to the media.

In the message reported by The Australian, Perrottet offered his support for the prime minister and Warringah candidate Katherine Deves, who has come under criticism for her views on transgender people and women’s sports.

The prime minister stands firm in supporting Deves’ candidacy, despite calls from moderates that he should disendorse the woman, who has invoked Nazis and Stolen Generations in since-deleted social media posts about transgender people.

Perrottet told reporters on Wednesday that he believes “girls should play sport against girls, and women should play sport against women”.

“There are strong views on either side of the debate. But the main aspect when we are engaged in these conversations and debates, is that those great virtues and values of compassion and tolerance are front and centre for us.”

Perrottet says he does not know how the message got out.

“I’m not getting into a discussion about text messages again, text messages don’t seem to go away. Moral of the story is don’t send text messages in this modern world.”

“My position is very clear, and I’ve made that today, and as I’ve said to Scott, on the substantive nature of this issue, I agree with him,” he told reporters.

“There might be others in my party that disagree, it doesn’t matter.

“Every time there is a disagreement, every time there are different views it seems to be the case we sit there and say ‘well that shouldn’t happen’. No, we should embrace, and enjoy, in a robust democracy in Australia that people can agree to disagree on various issues.”
