This role is fully remote, with 1-2 visits to our London office per month (once we have an office again) and we are open to applications from outside the UK.nnnnAbout the RolennWe are hiring an Engineering Manager to work alongside our existing Engineering Managers and the Director of Technology to oversee the management of our engineers and improve processes & working practices within the Technology team.nnEngineers at FutureLearn work in multidisciplinary product teams, collaborating with designers, other engineers, product managers and stakeholders. The Engineering Managers sit outside of product teams and manage engineers across different teams and disciplines.nnnKey ResponsibilitiesnnThe Engineering Manager reports to a Group Engineering Manager and has the following responsibilities:nnManaging individual engineersnnThe Engineering Managers support the professional development, performance and career progression of their direct reports through coaching and mentoring, and by helping them to decide & set goals and agree actionable steps towards achieving them. They encourage their reports to actively learn at work, and support that learning by proactively collecting feedback and providing it regularly & promptly.nnThe Engineering Manager is responsible for encouraging a healthy work/life balance and supporting their direct reports’ happiness and wellbeing at work. They provide pastoral care to their reports by listening to their personal needs & concerns and addressing them where possible.nnSupporting the Technology TeamnnThe Engineering Managers are responsible for developing & evolving the necessary structures to support everyone in the Technology Team; running and refining the Technology Team hiring and onboarding processes, salary and performance reviews, succession planning, and ensuring line management is fair and consistent across the team.nnThey will coordinate and facilitate discussions about team changes and are responsible for balancing skills and experience across the teams. They will encourage an inclusive culture of learning and knowledge sharing by organising & attending internal events and identifying opportunities for collaboration.nnRepresenting FutureLearn to the wider worldnnThe Engineering Managers help coordinate the placement & sharing of job ads to best attract a diverse range of candidates. They are also responsible for community outreach within the Technology team, in order to promote FutureLearn’s mission, culture and technology strategy.nnRequirementsnnAbout younnWe’re looking for an excellent communicator, with previous experience line managing engineers, and/or technical leads and technical architects. This experience could be either from a full-time position as a manager or as an additional responsibility to another role.nnYou’ll have previous experience working as an engineer in software development or other technology areas, so you understand what it means to work in a high-performing team in a product-focused tech company.
