Job Summary:

The School of Education is a unique school made up of ten diverse academic departments and many outreach and support units, all known for their dedication to high-quality outcomes and their desire to positively impact our world. The IT Director will manage core functional information technology (IT) support for the School of Education and provide strategic guidance where mission intersects with technology. Reporting to the School of Education’s Chief Financial Officer, this new role will lead a team of 4 IT professionals and student staff members, with the potential for growth in the future. They will also be a member of the Dean’s Senior Staff team. The IT Director will serve as the primary point of contact for the School of Education on a majority of the IT governance, communities, and groups at UW-Madison.

The position is responsible for the leadership and management of core functional IT; hiring, supervising, evaluating, and developing 4 very talented IT professionals that provide proactive and responsive support for escalated IT. This team helps select and implement strategic services relating to IT project management, infrastructure, cybersecurity, and purchasing. The Director should be committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility with regard to IT staffing, services, and outcomes. They will manage a budget of approximately $600,000. The Director will execute collaborative and creative problem-solving and scenario planning. Their leadership should include fostering trusting relationships with their direct reports and assisting with their professional development. The SoE IT Director will also convene an IT Leaders group within the School of Education, with the director of MERIT (Academic Technology and tier one support) and the Director of WCER Technical Services (Research Technology), to deliver strategic IT services. The IT Director will work to ensure clear communication and seamless referrals between the different IT support units and their areas of expertise.

Successful candidates will need to be able to build and sustain relationships with multiple audiences, both technical and non-technical. They will need to actively listen to, and communicate with, senior leadership in the School of Education. The successful candidate will lead and implement projects through coalition-building, often exercising influence without direct authority. The ideal candidate will be one who can understand the School’s strategic directions and business requirements and translate them into IT systems and solutions while navigating the unique cultures within a higher education environment. The candidate will also be effective at navigating competing demands, such as SoE priorities, campus priorities, and industry best practices.

Responsibilities:
Develops and directs the implementation of strategic plans for the division’s information technology (IT) function to ensure that resources are utilized to provide effective information technology services.Typically manages services through subordinate managers.

  • 30% Directsstrategic information technology planning initiatives and establishes divisional objectives to ensure appropriate use of financial, administrative, staffing resources, and alignment with the strategic plan
  • 10% Develops operating policies and procedures to comply with regulations, institutional policies, and divisional objectives
  • 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
  • 5% Develops and audits the budget
  • 15% Serves as the divisional IT liaison representing the division’s interests to internal and external stakeholders
  • 15% Advisesinstitutional or divisional leadership on information technology operations and business models
  • 15% Convenes and leads the SoE IT Team alongside the MERIT Director (Academic Technology) and the WCER Technical Services Director (Research Technology)

Bachelor’s Degree

Qualifications:

1. Minimum five years of professional IT experience with increasing responsibility.
2. Minimum three years of supervisory experience leading/managing/developing staff.
3. Working knowledge of technologies leveraged by institutions of higher education in support of staff and student services, and general administration.
4. Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.
