Job-Specific Responsibilities
The Project Manager coordinates business change by leading complex, and highly impactful technology projects. Responsible for the overall direction and successful completion of these projects, the Project Manager drives project ideation phases, navigates key stakeholder relationships, is an exceptional problem solver / decision maker, and works directly with project teams to achieve results. The Project manager demonstrates an increasing mastery of project management processes, an ability to work in a highly complex technical landscape, and is a master communicator.
Essential Responsibilities 

  • Able to lead and successfully deliver complex information technology projects.
  • Able to develop deep relationships with customers, vendors, and IT through trusting interactions.
  • Able to take a project from ideation stage through delivery and transitioning to service operation; is able to clearly scope and define projects.
  • Estimates projects using multiple techniques to arrive at realistic schedules. Clearly highlights methods used and assumptions made when communicating estimates.
  • Delivers project results predictably; on time, on budget, and on quality.
  • Maintains a deep understanding of the scope of work and is able to manage the project schedule; able to articulate how decisions may impact the schedule accordingly.
  • Actively identifies and manages project risks, issues, and decisions. Can navigate a complex organization in order to facilitate the resolution of these.
  • Provides consistent, timely, and well-crafted project progress status reporting and communications
  • Leverage steering and executive committees for decision-making, change management, and communications
  • Assumes additional responsibilities as assigned

Typical Core Duties

  • Responsible for assembling project team, assigning individual responsibilities, identifying appropriate resources needed, and developing schedules to ensure timely completion of project
  • Responsible for project discovery
  • Serve as expert regarding scope and project objectives, solution’s value and technology, as well as the role and function of each team member
  • Ensure work completion within schedule, budgetary and design constraints
  • Make decisions about analysis, design and testing; solve complex technical problems; and, when necessary, provide alternative methods for achieving goals
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues to leverage resources for successful project completion
  • Make independent decisions within the confines established by sponsors/business owners
  • Serve as primary contact with user groups and stakeholders
  • Leverage steering and executive committees for decision-making, change management, and communications
  • Absorb and leverage project related technology to ensure effective project management and collaboration
  • Advise unit/school regarding post project operations
  • Provide training to clients/staff
  • Apply Harvard University’s IT technical standards and best practices
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT Code of Conduct

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills
Additional Qualifications desired/preferred:  

  • 3+ years’ experience using key foundational project management tools; Microsoft Project, Microsoft Office Suite, Jira (or other related Agile “board” planning tools)
  • 3+ years’ experience facilitating effective program status reporting, performance reporting and project dashboards.
  • Demonstrated experience and proficiency in managing projects through the entire life cycle, including project initiation/planning, estimating, and scheduling. Can quickly bring teams from project charters to realistic software release plans.
  • Ability to work independently with little direction or direct supervision
  • Builds Use Cases for more complex/higher impact situations
  • Demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of the concepts and processes related to requirements, functional design and scope management.
  • Charters projects clearly to deliver on highest priority features and architecture.
  • Experience in vendor and 3rd party management
  • Proficiency in managing projects through the entire life cycle, including but not limited to project planning, estimating, and scheduling, can quickly bring teams from project charters to realistic release plans.
  • Excellent communication skills can “take charge of the conference room” and effectively lead project in all forms of communication project steering meetings, project chartering & kickoffs, stand ups, design sessions, brainstorms, problem solving sessions and retrospectives in addition to outstanding written skills
  • Demonstrates the following interpersonal attributes: Adaptable, flexible; uses grace & tact under pressure; unflappable when confronting challenges; resilient; positive outlook and “can do” attitude; respectful & approachable style.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy Project Management Foundations course (or external equivalent) preferred
  • PMP or other relevant certification and experience preferred, e.g., Scrum Master

  • Work is performed in an office setting

Additional Information
This role is offered as a hybrid (some combination of onsite and remote) where you may be required to be onsite at our Boston, MA based campus on a regular basis per week/month and/or for special occasions. Specific days and schedule will be determined between you and your manager.
