Job Description Summary
We are hiring the
inaugural Managing Director of the newly launched School of Arts & Sciences (SAS) Data Driven Discovery Initiative. This position requires
an individual familiar with working in an academic environment and the data science landscape. The position offers the opportunity to work
across the University as well as with government agencies and industry partners to foster a vibrant data science research community at
Penn.

Job Description

The School of Arts & Sciences at the University of Pennsylvania has launched a new Data
Driven Discovery Initiative to enhance data-driven discovery, train students and post-docs on data science methods, and use data science to
solve real world problems that improve health and well-being of communities and their residents. SAS researchers are active users and
developers of data science methods, but the Initiative aims to facilitate a greater exchange of ideas, promote the application of data
science to new research questions, and train the next generation of data scientists.

The inaugural Managing Director will be
instrumental in launching this new initiative, working with Penn faculty to develop a strategic plan, manage solicitation and funding of
research projects sponsored by the Initiative, develop a Data Science for Social Good program with a local and global focus, organize data
science tutorials and workshops at Penn, and implementing a plan to sustain the effort into the future through externally sponsored research
and philanthropy. Organizing activities involving Penn faculty, postdoctoral fellows and students will be an essential part of the job.

This is a 3 year term appointment with the possibility of renewal.

Qualifications:

Masters degree or PhD in a
relevant field (PhD preferred) with a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience working in an academic environment, or equivalent
combination of education and experience, ideally with demonstrable data science experience, broadly interpreted. We are particularly
interested in candidates with experience with data science initiatives at other academic institutions.

In addition, candidates should
highlight experience regarding:

  • Using data science methods in natural science or social science research projects
  • Familiarity
    with a range of data science methods and applications
  • Experience working with faculty in organizing and planning research
    operations
  • Experience working with government or industry partners
  • Fundraising through sponsored research or
    philanthropy
  • Managing complex teams
