The Network Engineer, with a team of networking experts, has primary responsibility of managing the health of the University campus network along with some project management, including leading smaller lifecycle upgrades or participating in larger engineering/architecture projects. Other responsibilities include troubleshooting reported issues, monitoring the network for performance issues, and proactively recommending preventive maintenance, documentation, and support. The network engineer will have an opportunity to advance a strong foundation by learning Aruba/HP OS, ClearPass, Airwave wireless, Ekahau Wireless Design, Cisco IOS, FortiOS, Spanning Tree, OSPF, Wireshark packet analysis, DNS, & DHCP.

Participates in 5pm-8am on-call rotation approximately every 8 weeks.  Some off-hours work will be required as needed and other duties as assigned.

Typical Core Duties

  • Participate fully in the build, configuration and documentation of IT infrastructure
  • Maintain and support IT infrastructure, ensuring adherence to standards and service level objectives
  • Monitor and troubleshoot IT infrastructure
  • Analyze and report on performance metrics
  • Implement and support robust and secure IT solutions
  • Draw on relationship and technical skills to act as technical liaison to internal and external stakeholders
  • Support and collaborate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Contribute to establishment of best practices
  • Abide by and follow the Harvard University IT technical standards, policies and Code of Conduct

Basic Qualifications

  • Minimum of two years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience

Additional Qualifications and Skills
The following Additional Qualifications are strongly preferred. If you meet some, but not all, you are still encouraged to apply; we value employees with a willingness to learn.

  • Knowledge of network administration and maintenance within an enterprise environment
  • Experience with network diagnostic, monitoring and analysis tools
  • Familiarity with some of the following: OSI model, switching & routing technologies, Aruba/HP OS, ClearPass, Airwave wireless, Cisco IOS, FortiOS, Spanning Tree, OSPF, Wireshark packet analysis, DNS, & DHCP.
  • N+, CCENT, or CCNA certification or equivalent Aruba certification is a plus.
  • Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor

Certificates and Licenses

  • Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred
  • Driver’s license needed to move equipment using Harvard-owned vehicles

Physical Requirements

  • Position will require moving around campus and working in confined spaces for extended time periods as well as the ability to lift/move 50lbs.

Interview and onboarding activity for this position may be conducted via telephone & Zoom video conferencing.

This position will be based in Cambridge, MA. HUIT supports hybrid workplace models where business and team needs allow.
