2021 was a rollercoaster ride for South African businesses, with record levels of load shedding, combined with boardroom power battles and inventive new corporate strategies.

Here’s how the year played out:

Less than a week into 2021, Eskom started stage 2 load shedding as generation units at Kusile power station tripped due to the failure of coal feed conveyor belts. This would start a record year of power cuts in South Africa, with 1 136 hours of outages, up 37% from the 859 hours recorded last year, according to data compiled by the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).
